How to Turn on Microsoft Office Macro Virus Protection
Office 97
In each Office 97 program that can use macros (Word, Excel, and Access):
- Open the Tools menu.
- Click Options.
- Select the General tab.
- Make sure the box next to “Macro virus protection” has a check in it.
Office 98
In each Office 98 program that can use macros (Word, Excel, and Access):
- Open the Tools menu.
- Click Preferences.
- Select the General tab.
- Make sure the box next to “Macro virus protection” has a check in it.
Office 2000
In Word and Excel:
- Open the Tools menu.
- Choose Macro.
- Choose Security.
- On the Security Level tab, make sure the security is either at “High” or “Medium”. (If you sometimes use macros, choose Medium. If you never use macros and you never receive documents with macros you need, choose High.)
Access 2000 does not have the concept of security levels. You should avoid opening Access databases from unknown sources and make sure to keep your anti-virus software updated.
Office 2003
In each Office 2003 program that can use macros (Word, Excel, and Access):
- Open the Tools menu.
- Choose Macro.
- Choose Security.
- On the Security Level tab, make sure the security is either at “High” or “Medium”. (If you sometimes use macros, choose Medium. If you never use macros and you never receive documents with macros you need, choose High.)
Office 2007
In each Office 2007 program that can use macros (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access):
- Click on the Button
menu. - Choose Options for that program (such as Word Options).
- Choose Trust Center, and click Trust Center Settings.
- Under Macro Settings, make sure the “Disable all macros with notification” button is checked. This is the default setting. When you open a document with a macro and a security warning appears, click Options on the message bar to open a security dialog box. You have the option to enable the macro or leave it disabled. You should enable the macro only if it is from a trusted source. Also, you can choose to “Trust all documents from this publisher” so that you won’t be notified again when you receive a document with a macro from this trusted source.
