Phishing Emails from Campus Execs

Many UA employees have received phishing emails with unusual messages that appear to be from the email accounts of UA executives or vice presidents; however, they are actually phishing emails from malicious actors. The emails attempt to engage the recipient into an email-only discussion, and some emails include requests to purchase gift cards.

If you have received an email like this, please delete the email. Additionally, if you are not a DUO user, please activate your DUO account at duo.ua.edu. Remember the red flags of phishing, and always check the “from” email address on suspicious messages. All official UA email should originate from a @ua.edu email address.

If you did receive this email and you have questions, please contact the IT Service Desk at 205-348-5555 or itsd@ua.edu.

Mojave Update

After weeks of internal testing, OIT now states that Mac users may upgrade their operating system to the newest version, Mojave. Before upgrading, users should ensure the McAfee Agent for Mac is version 5.5.1.374 or later, and the McAfee ENS for Mac must be version 10.5.6.103.

After upgrading to Mojave, users should check for updates in Microsoft. Users can check for updates by opening a Microsoft application, such as Word, then clicking Help from the top navigation, then click Check for Updates.

As always, OIT encourages users to backup all data before performing any upgrade. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the IT Service Desk at 205-348-5555 or itsd@ua.edu.

Please note one known issue – super drives will not load blank disks upon upgrading to Mojave.

OIT Recommends Not Installing Mac OS Mojave

Update 11/2/2018 – OIT continues our recommendation of not upgrading to the latest Mac OS Mojave. Many users that have upgraded are experiencing major issues – like being locked out of their machines. Please wait for the “all clear” from OIT before upgrading.

Mac is set to release its latest operating system, Mojave, Monday, Sept. 24, 2018. OIT is currently testing the OS for compatibility.

We recommend that NetAdmins test the operating system within their environment, and wait for further recommendation from OIT before putting the OS into production as any issues that cannot be resolved internally may require an update from Apple.

If you have any questions, please contact the IT Service Desk at 205-348-5555.

OIT Seeks to Expand Office 365 Applications

Office 365 is available for free for students, faculty and staff at The University of Alabama. Currently, this includes software applications Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, OneNote, Publisher and Access. Beginning spring 2019, OIT will expand upon these applications to include additional applications. Before an application is made available, OIT performs rigorous testing with each application to ensure its functionality and compatibility with other UA systems. Learn more on the OIT software catalog.

DUO Temporarily Disabled

Update 2:25 p.m. – OIT has restored DUO two-factor authentication to services and applications.  DUO will not be reapplied to Banner Admin until 8:00 p.m. this evening as to avoid any disruption causing users to log out and back in. DUO is investigating the root cause of the outage. Follow along with me at https://status.duo.com where the root cause will be posted. We apologize for this inconvenience.

OIT is investigating an issue with DUO two-factor authentication. The application appears to be timing out and not permitting access. While OIT security investigates this issue, we have temporarily removed DUO from required logins. Refer to the OIT Status page for up-to-date status posts.
