OIT to Require DUO for VPN Access

Beginning Monday, August 21, 2017, The Office of Information Technology will require DUO two-factor authentication to allow access to the UA Campus VPN. This includes UA students, faculty and staff; anyone using VPN.

Users can activate their DUO account today by visiting duo.ua.edu. When a user activates DUO, it will be applied to all DUO-enabled systems. Meaning DUO will be activated not only for VPN access, but also for the user’s myBama access. If the user is a student, then it will also be applied to their Crimson mail account.

After the August 21 date, when users connect to the campus VPN, they will be prompted for their username, password and second password.

In the second password field, the user can there enter the word “push” to receive a push notification to their smartphone, or they can enter a passcode received through the DUO app, via SMS or through the self-service feature on oit.ua.edu.

By requiring DUO for VPN access, OIT can better secure individual myBama user accounts, as well as the entire UA network.  Please review OIT’s website to see both VPN and DUO tutorials, as well as answers to frequently asked questions. Users can learn more about UA’s VPN on our website.

Please contact the IT Service Desk at 205-348-5555 or itsd@ua.edu with any questions or concerns.
