In this latest edition of We Are IT, we recognize the vital work of Will Largin, Systems Administrator for the University of Alabama Police Department (UAPD) and Public Safety. Having worked with the Office of Information Technology (OIT) in various capacities for several years, Largin discussed his technical journey, efforts toward campus safety, and the experiences that shaped his career.
“My official role title changes from time to time, but I’m essentially a systems administrator for the University of Alabama Police Department and Public Safety,” Largin explained. “I handle all their technology needs — car modems, camera systems, computer support, account management, you name it.”
Largin oversees a wide range of technological services, confirming that officers and staff have reliable access to necessary tools. Whether he is ordering and assembling new computers as warranties expire, installing camera systems in recently purchased police vehicles, or supervising secured access to sensitive evidence and phone records, Largin’s efforts serve a critical role in supporting the technical element of campus security. “Anything technology-related usually goes through me, and from there, I either handle it myself or coordinate with OIT for additional support.”
Largin’s work in IT began immediately after high school; “I graduated in 2016, and that summer, I became a student worker when it was still called Financial Affairs IT,” he explained. While working in desktop support, Largin developed foundational skills that prepared him for future positions, including working at the IT Service Desk, where he learned to quickly adapt to unforeseen challenges.
Largin’s career took a major pivot when Jonathan Hill, a contact from OIT, presented an opening with UAPD. “I was nervous to leave what was comfortable, but I decided to go for it,” said Largin. Beginning the role shortly before the COVID-19 disruptions, the experience proved challenging but invaluable. Upon graduating from college, he resumed his work with UAPD, assuming his current full-time role.
When asked about his most memorable professional project thus far, Largin highlighted an assignment with the Emergency Operations Lab. “When I was still a student worker, they trusted me to set up the entire Emergency Operations Lab,” he explained, referencing a vital facility in the parking deck across from Moody Music Building. “Setting up all the computers, making sure the server systems were imaged and configured correctly — it was stressful knowing how important it was, but it was also incredibly rewarding.”
Regarding the best part of his job, Largin credits the supportive team environment at UAPD. Compared to the fast-paced atmosphere of the service desk, which stresses immediate solutions, UAPD offers patience and trust, which Largin appreciates. “If I tell them something might take a couple of days, they’re understanding. They just say, ‘It’s all good. We know you’ll get it done.’ That trust means a lot,” Largin stated.
Outside of his work in IT, Largin enjoys various active and creative outlets. “I spend a lot of time at the gym, play a little guitar in my spare time, and of course, hang out with my two dogs, Daisy and Bailey,” he shared.
Largin’s professional career showcases the value of hands-on experience, hard work, and a willingness to exit your comfort zone. His contributions to UAPD guarantee that crucial campus operations remain secure, effective, and technologically advanced. “A lot of things had to happen to get me here,” Largin reflected. “But I’m glad they did.”
