Building the Next Generation of Cybersecurity Professionals

In Fall 2025, OIT Security, in partnership with TekStream, launched the University’s first Student Security Operations Center (SOC) Workforce Development Program, welcoming an inaugural cohort of eight students. This program is designed to provide hands-on experience in cybersecurity while addressing a critical national need: the shortage of skilled cybersecurity professionals in the United States.

Throughout their employment with OIT, SOC students will gain real-world experience in threat detection and incident response, learn to use industry-leading tools, and collaborate closely with OIT Security personnel and TekStream SOC teams. They will receive expert guidance from TekStream staff and training on networking and information security concepts, including advanced tools such as Splunk Enterprise Security and Splunk Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response (SOAR). TekStream also offers career-building opportunities for students who successfully complete the program.

These students serve as the first tier of security response, monitoring and triaging alerts to help the University’s information security team manage an increasing volume of incidents. They escalate critical alerts to senior staff, ensuring timely and effective responses. During business hours, the students provide SOC coverage, with TekStream continuing operations in the evening.

With the U.S. cybersecurity workforce facing a significant talent gap, initiatives like this program are essential to preparing the next generation of professionals. By equipping students with practical skills and industry experience, the University is contributing to a stronger, more resilient cybersecurity ecosystem.
