Access to Google Drive Ends May 2022
After the Spring 2022 Semester, Google Drive will no longer be available to UA students and alumni with Crimson Google accounts.
All content stored on Crimson Google Drive accounts will be deleted on May 16, 2022. Current UA Students with a Crimson Google account (students enrolled before May 2021) should move all Google Drive content to Microsoft OneDrive. Alumni and former students should export content to a personal storage space. Microsoft offers a discounted O365 subscription to UA graduates; check out the Microsoft O365 website for more information.
Make the Switch to OneDrive
Students have 3 options for migrating content. Mover is the recommended tool for UA students to migrate content from Google Drive to OneDrive. Google Takeout can be used to export all Google content. Users can also simply download content from Google Drive and upload to OneDrive.
Why is this happening?
OIT is working to consolidate redundant email and cloud storage environments at UA. One major step in this project was completed by migrating Crimson email accounts from Google to Microsoft O365. Coincidentally, Google will be limiting available storage space for Google for Education customers in 2022.
What if I don’t move my content?
All content stored on Crimson Google Drive accounts will be deleted on May 16, 2022.
Where should I move my content?
Current students should move content to OneDrive. Access OneDrive at onedrive.com. UA alumni and former students should export content and store it in a personal storage space. View the links above for options on migrating or exporting and uploading content. Microsoft offers a discounted O365 subscription to UA graduates; check out the Microsoft O365 website for more information.
If I use the tools above, what gets moved?
Files that you own will be moved. If a file was shared with you, but you are not the owner, it will not be moved.
What about file collaboration? Do I need to re-share files in OneDrive?
By using the tools above, files are moved, but file sharing information does not move over. Once your files are in OneDrive, share them with necessary individuals.
Can I access content on OneDrive after I graduate?
OneDrive is offered to current UA students, faculty and staff. Upon graduation or separation from the University, students have 30 days to export content from their UA OneDrive account and save it in another location.
Why can’t alumni continue to use this service?
Only current students, faculty and staff are licensed to use services through UA’s software license agreements.
How do I move content from Google Drive to Microsoft OneDrive?
There are several options available for moving content from Google Drive to Microsoft OneDrive. The simplest option is to download all content from Google Drive and upload to OneDrive. Helpful resources are available above.
Can I move content to Box?
OneDrive is the recommended storage space for UA students, faculty and staff.
Is Box going away?
No, the University has an active license agreement with Box. Box is an integral tool for many UA faculty, staff and students; however, OneDrive is the recommended solution. Because email is hosted in Microsoft O365, using OneDrive is the easiest cloud storage tool to use as it is built-in with the apps you know and love like Teams, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
